The Diplomats were Washington’s third professional soccer team of the modern era (the Washington Whips and Washington Darts preceded them). The Diplomats were coached by former New York Generals player and Cosmos coach Gordon Bradley. The Cosmos were Washington’s main rival, and games between the two teams drew large crowds to DC’s RFK Stadium. The Dips’ best season was 1979 when they went 19-11 and reached the first round of the playoffs.
